Because MelodicMatchTM bases its results on choices that the user makes, the charts that it produces inevitably reflect the engagement with the music that the user has achieved. This corollary can have valuable implications from a pedagogical perspective.

In making decisions about the patterns and relationships in a search, the user must come to grips with the music at both a detailed level (often at the "surface" of the music being examined) and with a view to the music's overall design. In communicating the rationale behind these decisions, the user must inevitably articulate an understanding of the music. It is in this capacity that MelodicMatch can not only enhance the user's understanding of the music in question, but can also reveal much about the user's prior experience.

Our home page alludes to the qualities of intellectual curiosity and a willingness to experiment. For a teacher evaluating a set of MelodicMatch searches assembled by a class of students, these qualities will be most evident in the searches that are thorough, that reveal the structure of the music, and that afford a fertile basis for comparison with similar works. The student who is able to experiment with the patterns in a search in order to produce a set of coherent results and who has the capacity to produce a clear exegesis of them will be the one who profits most from an exposure to MelodicMatch. In using MelodicMatch, such a student will also develop modes of thinking that will be transferable to activities outside music analysis.

In the research sphere, MelodicMatch gives the user the freedom to capitalise on his or her experience without necessarily being tied to any particular analytical model. As MelodicMatch creates search files that can be sent as email attachments, the user can store and transmit fully-configured searches to colleagues. This can enable a collegiate approach to music analysis that might otherwise be difficult or unwieldy.
